UNIT 3.11 SPECTROSCOPY AND THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
Chemistry is the study of matter and interactions. Chemistry overlaps with many other sciences.
Below is the contents for this sub unit.
SPECTROSCOPY AND THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
Review 'Light in Chemistry'

We learned in Chemistry 1 that atoms can absorb energy and release certain frequencies. We can use that information to identify the atoms. This works for molecules as well.

Absorption is when certain energy levels are absorbed by a molecule or atom. We can see which frequencies are absorbed.

Emission is when the frequencies are released after being energy had been absorbed.

So the UV and the visible radiation is associated with the electron energy levels.

Infrared is associated with transitions in vibration levels of molecules. (bond distance)

Microwave is associated with molecular rotation (when part of a molecule rotates around a bond).
