UNIT 4.7 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Chemistry is the study of matter and interactions. Chemistry overlaps with many other sciences.
Below is the contents for this sub unit.
TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Review 'Balancing Equations and Reaction Types'

We talked about:
Synthesis - 2 simple atoms/compounds making a more complex molecule
Decomposition - look for a large molecule decomposing into simpler elements
Single replacement - look for an element alone switching places
Double replacement - two pairs, switching partners
Combustion - a hydrocarbon and oxygen make water and carbon dioxide

There are also:
Precipitation - something insoluble is formed and a precipitate (solid) falls to the bottom. These often involve ions that become insoluble in a replacement reaction.
Acid-Base reaction - one or more protons (positive hydrogen) is transferred. There is an entire section on this later.
Oxidation-reduction (redox) - involves transfer of one or more electrons between chemicals. Combustion is actually a special case redox reaction.

In redox, one species is oxidized (becomes more positive) and one is reduced (becomes more negative). These can be assigned to individual atoms. This allows us to split a redox into 2 half reactions, the oxidation and the reduction.
